One of the best games of all time?
Super Metroid often appears in lists of "the best games of all time," and it's not hard to see why. The game manages to use 16-bit graphics and sound to immerse you in an alien world that always feels slightly claustrophobic and where you never quite feel at ease.

You explore this world at your own pace and in your own way. The game gives you a lot of freedom in that respect, and also offers plenty of opportunities to see things that you wouldn't quite have access to yet. This unique atmosphere and the incredibly free exploration make Super Metroid very special, and make this game one of my favorite games of all time.

A beautiful game where you can get lost without losing your way.
In the summer of 2017, I decided to dive into the Metroid franchise. I've been a Nintendo fan for over a decade, trying practically all the franchises, but my only experience with Metroid games until then was Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Since the original Metroid for the NES was only 3 euros on Virtual Console at the time, I decided to buy it, and I was so impressed that I later purchased Super Metroid. I dare say that Super Metroid might be the best game I've ever played.

I can't think of a game better at building an atmosphere. The planet Zebes where the game takes place truly feels alive, yet you still feel eerily alone at times. The game guides you without words on where to go, so you never really get stuck while feeling like the game respects your intelligence. The animations and sprite work are beautiful, and the music (although perhaps not as memorable as some Zelda music and the like) sets the perfect tone. Samus feels heavy yet agile, and a few upgrades along with the wall jump make Zebes later in the game a sort of playground where half the fun comes from controlling Samus alone. This is a quality that, in my opinion, only Super Mario Sunshine (GC) and Super Mario Odyssey (Switch) share.

Towards the end of my playthrough, I wondered if I had missed any interesting collectibles, so I looked up a walkthrough. To my surprise, due to using the wall jump, I had played the game in a completely different order than what was "intended." Drawing this conclusion was perhaps my most beautiful gaming moment ever. The idea that you can play the game in a different order without encountering problems, in a Metroidvania no less, is absolutely marvelous. This was the icing on the cake for me, a confirmation of the undeniable quality of the game.

The length of the game varies based on how good you are, but you'll easily spend 8 hours on it, and the game genuinely invites you to play it again. It's a bit on the pricier side nowadays, but in my opinion, the game is 100% worth it.

How does wall jumping work in Super Metroid on the SNES?

Super Metroid features a move called the walljump. This allows you to virtually reach infinite heights as long as there is a wall available. To perform the walljump, jump towards a wall, then jump away from the wall by pointing the arrows away from the wall and pressing the jump button. After your walljump, you can jump back towards the wall and walljump again. By using this technique, you can access areas early in the game where you're not supposed to reach without upgrades yet.
