Impressive but Limited Port of Doom on the SNES
Doom for the SNES feels to me like an impressive yet limited port of the classic first-person shooter. I think the developers really did their best to bring the intense action of the original to a 16-bit console, but unfortunately, you can tell that it somewhat suffers from technical limitations. The graphical performance is downgraded, with a low resolution and slow framerate, which diminishes the smooth gameplay of the original. Still, I must say that the game manages to retain the atmosphere of the demonic world and the iconic level design, which is an achievement in itself. The shooter action still feels great and the Doom setting remains simply top-notch.
The addition of the Super FX chip has certainly helped in realising this technical wonder on the SNES. It's impressive how they managed to keep the essence of Doom intact, despite the hardware limitations. The atmosphere is oppressive and the levels are packed with challenging enemies and secrets to discover. For me, it’s a nostalgic shooter trip that takes you back to the days of the classic Doom experience, but it does lack the smooth gameplay you might be used to from other versions.
For fans of Doom, this SNES version is a nice piece of history to experience. It’s not the absolute best way to play Doom, but still a cool way to see how the game has come to life on different platforms. If you have a soft spot for retro gaming and a love for classic shooters, then this version of Doom is definitely worth a try.
